The moment when you first wake up in the morning is the most wonderful of the twenty-four hours. No matter how weary or dreary you may feel, if you possess the certainty that, during the day that lies before you, absolutely anything may happen. And if you feel that, it practically always doesn’t. However the possibility is always there and if you feel so, so be it. You’ve got a lot of choices. If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you’re not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice.

Every day when I wake up, I can see the orange haze on the horizon as the morning exhales a yawn, and seems to be ready to rise. The time just before dawn contains the most energy of all hours of the day. This has helped me become an early riser and an early doer…. When I wake to see that it’s light out already, I feel like the world has started without me. Instinctively I’ve never required an alarm to do so. Anyways there is no hope for a civilization which starts each day to the sound of an alarm clock. Nevertheless, I’ve never popped out of bed. If people were meant to pop out of bed, we’d all sleep in toasters.

I love to see the sun rise one ribbon at a time. And I never work before breakfast; if I do have to work before breakfast, I eat my breakfast first. Remember that if you lose an hour in the morning, you will be all day hunting for it.

An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day. In the morning a man walks with his whole body; in the evening, only with his legs. Who will tell whether one happy moment of love or the joy of breathing or walking on a bright morning and smelling the fresh air, is not worth all the suffering and effort which life implies. At least I would not. And the other thing I don’t do is arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.

After all, why does a person even get up in the morning? You have breakfast, you floss your teeth so you’ll have healthy gums in your old age, and then you get in your car and drive down I-10 and die. Life is so stupid I can’t stand it. My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.
